VAC-100

VANC Authoring Card

Overview The VAC-100 VANC Data Authoring Inserter provides a cost-effective means of authoring and inserting the most common VANC data into a SMPTE 259M or SMPTE 292M signal. The card, through its user interface, allows most types of VANC data to be created and stored within the card. Switches (GPIOs) can be used to control the VANC data that the card inserts. The card automatically adapts to the video at its input to produce the correct data at its output.

The VAC-100 can author and insert the following VANC data types:

Active Format Description (AFD), SMPTE 2016
Audio Metadata, SMPTE 2020 method A & B
Time-code SMPTE 12M-2
Text Tags, to identify the source of the video
V-ISAN
Digital Program Insertion (DPI) Triggers, SCTE-104 / SMPTE 2010
Generic Data, for hand-coded data
Caption Test, for testing CEA-708

Whether you are using audio metadata to control the processing of the audio or AFD to tell the cable company how your video should be up/down converted, the VAC-100 provides a simple interface to author and then insert the data. The VAC-100 is ideal anywhere in the broadcast path. It tags remote feeds with text describing the origination of the signal in a way that sticks with the video. It adds metadata in post production so that the content is broadcast ready. In the video distribution path the card adds triggers for commercial inserts or video branding.

The VAC-100 offers a complete user interface through Dashboard, the free Java-based application that provides a common control and monitoring interface for multiple openGear frames and cards. Also available is a heads-up-display feature on separate analog video and SDI monitoring outputs. When connected to a monitor and activated, card status and parameters can be viewed and adjusted using the card-mounted finger joystick and an easy to use menu system.

To simplify workflow the VAC-100 understands the metadata and automatically adapts to the incoming video. Your settings are stored in flash on the card and may be selected using GPI (switch) inputs or through the Dashboard interface.

Insert into SMPTE 292M and SMPTE 259:

Metadata
Time-code
Triggers
User-defined Data

The VAC-100 helps solve challenges such as:

Incorrect audio play-out (e.g. missing center channel)
"Postage stamp" images (e.g. after two stages of up/ down conversion)
Triggering of downstream equipment
Closed-caption testing

Features

Cost effective single-slot card for use in openGear frame
Storage for 10 metadata or other services authored right on the card
Inserts up to four (4) metadata or other services into SMPTE 291M-compliant VANC packets in an HD (292M) or SD (259M) signal
- Audio metadata (SMPTE 2020)
- Active Format Descriptor (AFD) (SMPTE 2016)
- Other data
Provides full control of DID, SDID, insertion line, and 292M component (chroma or luma)
Automatically adapts to standard HD and SD video formats
Selection of inserted VANC services can be controlled by GPIO inputs
Remote setup using Dashboard software via an Ethernet connection
Local setup using an on-board joystick-style control and a video output connected to a picture monitor
On-board firmware can be updated remotely through the frame's Ethernet connection
Program video path protected by bypass relay in an available rear I/O module: output connected directly to input when power is off or the VAC-100 is ejected, and controlled by card-edge pushbutton and remote software
