CMI-100

Constant Metadata VANC Inserter

Overview Based on the openGear open-architecture modular frame, CMI-100 provides the television industry with a cost-effective and automated means of inserting constant metadata into SMPTE 259M and SMPTE 292M signals.

The CMI-100 automatically and repetitively inserts audio metadata, active format descriptors (AFD), and other metadata into the VANC of HD and SD signals.

The CMI-100 helps solve challenges such as:

Incorrect audio play-out (e.g. missing center channel)
"Postage stamp" images (e.g. after two stages of up/ down conversion)
Triggering of downstream equipment

The CMI-100 offers a complete user interface through DashboardT, the free Java-based application that provides a common control and monitoring interface for multiple openGear frames and cards.

Also available is a heads-up-display feature on separate analog video and SDI monitoring outputs. When connected to a monitor and activated, card status and parameters can be viewed and adjusted using the card-mounted finger joystick and an easy to use menu system.

To simplify workflow, a number of innovative tools for defining and selecting metadata services are available. For example:

User specified VANC services can be inserted based on video type. For example, the CMI-100 can insert 5.1+2 audio metadata and 16:9 AFD when an HD signal is present. When an SD signal is present, it can insert stereo audio metadata and 4:3 AFD.
VANC services can also be triggered by contact closures on rear-panel GPIO connectors.
Constant metadata packets (one or two packets of up to 255 bytes per service) can be authored using the Norpak VANC MetaGenerator software application, and then uploaded into the CMI-100 using DashBoard.
Packets can also be captured from the video input. The user interface provides controls that allow the user to select packets from a list of those that are present in the input, and save them to non-volatile memory for later use.

Features

Cost effective single-slot card for use in openGear frame
Automated metadata insertion
Inserts up to four (4) metadata or other services into SMPTE 291M-compliant VANC packets in an HD (292M) or SD (259M) signal
- Audio metadata (SMPTE 2020)
- Active Format Descriptor (AFD) (SMPTE 2016)
- Other data
Inserted services can be selected from a variety of services stored in on-board memory
Provides full control of DID, SDID, insertion line, and 292M component (chroma or luma)
Automatically recognizes and uses standard HD and SD video formats
Selection of inserted VANC services can be controlled by GPIO inputs or tied to the input video format
Remote setup using Dashboard software via an Ethernet connection
Local setup using an on-board joystick-style control and a video output connected to a picture monitor
VANC packets can be created using a metadata authoring program provided with the CMI-100
VANC packets can also be captured from the input video signal and stored in the card for later use
On-board firmware can be updated remotely through the frame's Ethernet connection
Program video path protected by bypass relay in an available rear I/O module: output connected directly to input when power is off or the CMI-100 is ejected, and controlled by card-edge pushbutton and remote software
